Quick Summary
This post is a practical, route-by-route guide to traveling around Thailand with estimated travel times—from landing in Bangkok to heading north, south, or to the islands—plus in-city transit tips.
Note: Times are averages (excluding queues/traffic/flight delays). Add an extra 30–90 minutes, especially during holidays.
Airlines (how to choose)
Thailand has both full-service and low-cost airlines. Most popular routes operate multiple daily flights from Bangkok (BKK/DMK) to major destinations.
Full-service vs low-cost
Full-service: often includes checked baggage and sometimes meals (depends on fare class). Great if you have luggage or want comfort.
Low-cost: cheaper base fare, but add-ons (checked bag, seat selection, meals) can increase the total—compare the final price before booking.
Airports: many low-cost flights depart from DMK, while many full-service flights depart from BKK (varies by route).
Booking tips
If you’re connecting to a ferry or a long transfer, choose a morning flight and allow at least 2–3 hours for connections.
High season and long holidays (New Year, Songkran, long weekends) sell out fast—book early.
If you need checked baggage, compare ‘fare + baggage’ between low-cost and full-service airlines.
Transit options (most common)
Airport → Downtown Bangkok
Airport Rail Link (from BKK): fast and reliable during rush hour; connect at Phaya Thai (BTS) or Makkasan (MRT).
Taxi/ride-hailing: most convenient with lots of luggage or groups, but travel time varies with traffic.
Airport buses/vans: budget-friendly, but slower and route-dependent.
Airport → Pier (for islands)
Surat Thani (URT) → Donsak Pier: typically ~1.5–2 hrs by van/bus, then ~1.5–2 hrs by ferry to Samui/Phangan.
Phuket/Krabi: airport to piers/boat points can take ~30–120 min depending on destination—check the last ferry time.
Tip: If you must catch a ferry, allow at least 2 hours between landing and ferry departure.
Train/bus (budget alternatives)
Overnight sleeper train: saves daytime travel and one night of accommodation; book ahead in peak periods.
Overnight coach: multiple comfort levels; total time depends on road conditions and rest stops.
Tip: Bring a light jacket (AC can be cold) and a power bank.
1) From Suvarnabhumi (BKK) / Don Mueang (DMK) into Bangkok
Airport Rail Link (from BKK): ~30 min to Phaya Thai + connect to BTS/MRT.
Taxi/ride-hailing: ~40–90 min (traffic-dependent), best with lots of luggage.
Airport bus: ~60–120 min (route and traffic dependent).
2) Bangkok → Chiang Mai (North)
Great for cafés, nature, temples, and mountain trips.
Flight (DMK/BKK → CNX): ~1 hr 10 min flight time + allow 1–2 hrs for check-in.
Overnight train (Bang Sue/Hua Lamphong → Chiang Mai): ~11–13 hrs; good if you want to save one night of accommodation.
Coach (Mo Chit → Chiang Mai): ~9–11 hrs (overnight is convenient).
Recommendation: If you’re short on time, fly. If you want the experience and to save money, take the sleeper train.
3) Bangkok → Phuket / Krabi (Andaman coast)
Perfect for beaches, islands, and sea-view cafés.
Flight (DMK/BKK → HKT/KBV): ~1 hr 20–30 min + allow 1–2 hrs for check-in.
Coach/bus (Bangkok → Phuket/Krabi): ~11–14 hrs (overnight works well).
Airport transfer: Phuket ~45–90 min to Patong/Old Town; Krabi ~30–60 min to Ao Nang.
Recommendation: If you’re connecting to islands (Phi Phi, Lanta, Similan), choose an early flight and allow time for the pier transfer.
4) Bangkok → Samui / Phangan / Tao (Gulf islands)
Great for relaxed island vibes, parties, and diving.
Fly direct to Samui (USM): ~1 hr 10 min (often pricier) + local transfer ~10–30 min.
Fly to Surat Thani (URT): ~1 hr 10 min + van/bus to Donsak Pier ~1.5–2 hrs + ferry ~1.5–2 hrs.
URT route total (excluding waiting): ~4–6 hrs from landing to the island.
Recommendation: For budget, choose URT + van + ferry. If time is tight, fly into Samui.
5) Bangkok → Chiang Rai / Mae Hong Son (deeper North)
Fly to Chiang Rai (CEI): ~1 hr 20 min + transfer into town ~15–30 min.
Mae Hong Son (HGN): flights may be direct or via connections depending on the day; or drive from Chiang Mai ~5–7 hrs (winding mountain roads).
Tip: If driving in the mountains, plan breaks and allow extra time.
6) Getting around in each destination
Bangkok: BTS/MRT is fastest during traffic; canal boats/Chao Phraya boats are great for riverside areas.
Chiang Mai: rent a scooter/car (if experienced) or use ride-hailing; the Old City is walkable.
Phuket/Krabi: distances are larger—renting a car or hiring a driver can be easiest; ride-hailing may be limited in some areas.
Pre-trip checklist
Airport buffer time: in Bangkok rush hour, allow 60–120 minutes to reach the airport.
If connecting to islands: choose morning flights and check the last ferry schedule.
For overnight trains/coaches: bring a light jacket (AC is cold).
